Paluski Ripple..my new fishing kayak

Filed under: fishing, hunting, kayaking, paluski, ripple — outdoorsontario @ 9:59 pm

Well I’ve done my comparison shopping, looked at , sat in, compared features, prices, and reviews. My choice a Paluski Ripple. They make a version geared to the fisherman and duck hunters also use them; a dark green almost mauve color. I intend on spending a lot of time exploring some lakes that until now have been impossible for me to get to with my 14ft. aluminum. Rod holders, and other attachments are available to outfit the kayak for fishing.

Toronto Sportsman Show…….I can’t sleep..lol

Filed under: boating, fishing, hunting, ontario, show, sportsman, toronto — outdoorsontario @ 11:39 pm

This is going to be one heck of an upcoming week. The Toronto Sportsman Show; how does any man woman or child who enjoys the Great Outdoors survive such an event. All the latest in tackle, rods, guns, campers, atv’s……..my head is spinning already. I’m sure that it’s worse than the anticipation of Christmas. Now all I have to do is figure out what I need the most…….did i say “need?” yeh ok let’s go with that…..What I need…lmao. I think that I can justify purchasing almost anything and everything at the show; it’s just a matter of priorities. Yeh well come on stick a kid in a candy store and every box of candy becomes a priority. I’ll have to report back after next week to let you know how I did…….. Ok I want a kayak…..but i also want a quad, but I need a utility trailer…………….I wouldn’t mind a 24ft or so trailer too….I must be getting old, I like my comfort. I’ve been thinking lately that a new trolling motor would come in handy, and then theres the old two foot itis……you know I own a 14 ft but a 16 foot would be better, new motor………….oh yeh I’ve been really kicking myself for selling my canoe. Then there’s all the new fangled gadgets that nobody even knows about……….how much time do I have at the show? maybe a vacation day would help, and two more to add up the debt I rack up.
But seriously folks, The Toronto Sportsman Show is well worth attending, lots to see and lots to do, take the kids, take the wife, take the girlfriend/boyfriend; maybe you can talk the significant other into buying the trailer and you can focus on the bigger boat or new ATV. I know thats my strategy…………and damned I hope it works this year or I’m going to have to come up with a new one for next year. Check it out and enjoy! http://www.sportshows.ca/Toronto/index.html

Calling Moose

Filed under: British Columbia, calling, columbia, hunting, moose, northern — outdoorsontario @ 3:41 pm

My first experience at actually even attempting calling moose happened while I was living in Northwestern British Columbia. One of my fellow Forestry officers had observed a large bull moose up on a cut block in mid to late July. Our hunting trip took place September 20th; and was just one of those last minute ideas….hey lets go wack a moose tomorrow.ok, be at your place at 6:00 a.m. Well he arrived at 8:00, we got up to the cut block at about 9:00 a.m. parked the truck walked approximately 1 mile on an old skid trail and looked around observing large tracks lots of sign but old. I decided to stand up on a log and call, I had read and listened to calls so I attempted to mimic that sound. Much to my amazement he answered. This bull was over 2 kilometres away but I could clearly here his low gutteral grunt. I said to my partner do you think he’ll cross that lake? No, we’ll have to go around the other side. Well I kept calling the bull kept answering and you could tell he was getting closer to the far side of the lake. So I said well lets just walk back to the truck and I’ll call him right to the truck. 45 minutes later he was standing broadside to me at 30 feet, 54 inch rack…..two shots with a 338 and he was down. So we turned the truck around, slid the plywood out to make a ramp, hooked a winch to his horns and winched him up into the box. Hunt complete, hunt successful and my partner shaking his head in absolute disbelief. So don’t worry about sounding stupid it works, and its not hard to do. Remember though that moose lock into your position from your first call and can locate you like they have an onboard GPS unit in their head. Give it time as sometimes smaller bulls will come in silent worried they are going to get their butts kicked by the big boy. Good luck give it a try, but also be careful, I have had numerous bulls charge me. The moose in the photo is not the one I shot, but I thought I should include a photo.

Head Lamps Have Come A Long Way

Filed under: fishing, head, hiking, hunting, lamp, light, outdoors, spot — outdoorsontario @ 10:27 am

The technology in todays head lamps is phenomenal; every outdoors enthusiast should have one in their pack. If you do purchase one, do your research and don’t skimp on price. In todays market you get what you pay for……I personally use a 3 light unit and find it more than adequate. One of the best things about headlamps is the ability to function hands free..walking working, reading maps, fishing, hunting, hiking………..they’re awesome

Have a great hunting story…..

Filed under: buck, hunting, ontario, whitetail — outdoorsontario @ 12:14 pm

This ten point fell to the co-ordination of two cross bow bolts fired at the same time. Grandfather and grandson on 3…..1,2,3………..perfect shots! Way to go, memories that last a life time, I can think of no better way to share a hunting experience.
