Help Trout Unlimited & Look Cool Too

It seems like every organization wants a specialty license plate these days, and I just got back from the tag office with my new Trout Unlimited license plate.

Georgia Trout Unlimited Tag

It’s an additional $25 a year, but $24 of it goes toward Georgia DNR efforts to stock and support trout in Georgia.  Additionally, you can get TU license plates in Tennessee, Pennsylvania, and Montana.

GA Hunters for the Hungary Donation Site Changed

With the upcoming Georgia Hunters for the Hungry (GHFTH) collection weekend scheduled for Oct. 27-28, 2007, the Georgia Department of Natural Resources, Wildlife Resources Division (WRD) announces a change in the Dawsonville collection site location. WRD has relocated the Dawsonville collection site from Dawsonville City Hall to the Georgia Forestry Commission – Dawson Forest Unit/Hightower Educational Forest to avoid potential conflict with the annual Moonshine Festival, which is scheduled for the same weekend. The new site, just one mile east of the old site, offers improved convenience to hunters who want to participate in the event.

The new location, the Georgia Forestry Commission – Dawson Forest Unit/Hightower Educational Forest, is located on Hwy. 53, adjacent to the Etowah River, one mile east of Dawsonville City Hall or approximately 1.5 miles west of GA 400 (4500 Hwy. 53, Dawsonville, Ga. 30534).

See the Press Release for more info.

When Deer Attack

It appears that you can have pet deer still in Georgia… I never knew. Over the weekend the owner of the Trail of Tears Ranch in Cherokee County was gored to death by a pet red deer.  It appears that the deer had been acting aggressively due to the coming rut, no word on why he was in the animal’s pen when it happened.

Sunrise/Sunset Part II

A couple more from the sunrise & sunset photo file.  Usually, I’m lucky to take twenty pictures, and have two come out to be worthwhile.  On a previous trip to the Croatan National Forest and the Nuese River in North Carolina, I got a bit more lucky. I caught these just after setting up camp on a long sandy beach at the confluence of the river and the Atlantic.

I’m not sure if this is one tree with two trunks or two trees all together…

Sunset through a tree on the Nuese River

Passengers on board must have caught the sunset too:

And finally, some cool reflections in a couple pools on the beach:

Rock Out with Your ‘Hooch Out - The 2007 Echo Project

Dubbed “the environmentally friendly music festival,” the 2007 Echo Project aims to not only be environmentally neutral, but also actually have a positive impact on its surroundings. The three-day event will be held Oct. 12-14 in Fairburn, GA, just South of Atlanta. Free camping on the 350+ acre farm on the banks of the Chattahoochee River, and all amenities are powered by alternative energy sources. What about the line up you say? While you might expect the stages to be headlined by a couple of banjo wielding has beens, the schedule is actually quite impressive:

  • Phil Lesh & Friends
  • MOE
  • The Killers
  • Les Claypool
  • The Roots
  • Cypress Hill
  • & a whole bunch more.

Visit The Echo Project’s website for more information on sustainability, tickets, directions, etc.

Fish - Mercury Comeback

Finally some good news. I devour smoked salmon in the late summer & early fall when they are on there runs in the West, in fact we were firing up the smoker twice a week or more this season. I do however worry about mercury levels in the fish, and steer clear of farmed salmon for this reason.

Now the good news: A team of researchers in Western Ontario have found that mercury levels in fish can drop off dramatically once mercury emissions from power plants and other sources are eliminated from the air above the lake surface.  It appears that fish gain most of their mercury toxicity from airborne mercury that settles on the lake surface.  This means that curbs on mercury output, once in place could have a great effect on mercury levels in fish in just a few years!

Sunset/Sunrise Pictures Part 1

Over the last few years, I’ve been blessed to find myself in a number of extraordinary spots.  I always try to have a camera handy, especially around sun up and sun down.  In this sunrise/sunset series I’m going to share some of my best, and as always, if you want a full size of any of the images - just send me an email.

Shoot like a girl, if you can

I admit, I’m not much of a hunter, but I love shooting trap, skeet, and my new favorite: five stand. Combine that with my wife’s ability to find (and buy) anything in pink…

 Pink 20 Gauge

Only in America, does she not have an excuse to go shooting this Saturday.

Been in front of a computer too long…

My apologies to The Great Outsmores Nation, yes, both of you.  I’ve been buried behind this computer screen fighting spam (and winning), adding a support forum for OutdoorsBlogger, and last, but certainly not least, hacking up the OutdoorsBlogger Big Post Map.  In between work and Georgia Football, I’ve also decided to start training for my first Marathon this Thanksgiving.  In reality, I’ll probably have to settle on the half marathon, but proceeds go to feed the homeless on Thanksgiving, so it’s all good.
