Pawn or Hero? You Decide

Looks like ol’ GW’s got a plan to combat the rising temperatures of the Earth. Meanwhile…we had a very uncommon mid-April frost here in Arkansas. What’s causing all the chaotic weather? El Nina, Global cooling, or “Day After Tomorrow” coming true? You tell me:

Sulfur Mountain Rescue Update

Hey everyone, a couple of weeks back I told about the rescue of the mentally handicapped boy near Sulfur Mountain(you can read my post here ). Today’s paper had an update on that story and I thought it might be interesting to share it.

The boy, Billy Cook, spent four days in a hospital in Springfield, MO where he was treated for a cracked skull, broken arm, frostbite, and some minor scrapes and bruises. From what it looks like, he’s doing much better! To read the full article and the story of his disappearance and finding, click here .

It looks like it’ll probably be Friday when I give my latest trip report…so stay tuned!

A Sunday Miracle

*Update 1:00 pm 1/28/08- After arriving at the hospital. They found the boy had a broken arm, frostbite on one foot, and scrapes and bruises.

When I got to church this morning (Sunday), a good friend of mine informed me that an 8 year old boy with down syndrome was lost near Sulfur Mountain. He had went missing on Saturday afternoon and searchers had been looking all night long. I couldn’t imagine being 8 and stranded in the woods overnight with below freezing temps. Immediately, I grabbed one of my friends and we headed out to join the search and rescue team. When we arrived at the command center, the boy had already been found. He had spent the night in the woods but was very responsive. Last I checked he was being transported to a hospital and he should be just fine. Thank God for that miracle! Here’s a link to the story in our local paper.

Stay tuned tomorrow for the top 10 winter camping tips. Check back Wednesday also as I will be giving a trip report from Indian Creek, one of the most amazing, yet challenging places I’ve ever been!

From One Extreme to the Next

The weather in the Ozarks is just ridiculous right now! It was less than a week ago that we were having temps in the lower teens around here. Now, we’ve had two days of record setting high temperatures and we’re expecting another record setter today (Monday). The past two days have been in the 70’s! The average temperatures for this time of year are generally in the 30’s and lower 40’s. Last time I checked…it’s still January!

This is crazy:

TIME’s Person of the Year

Well, Time Magazine is on the hunt for it’s person of the year and the excitement is killing me. Let’s see who the nominees are…Bill Cosby…James Crosby…Britney Spears…Mother Earth. MOTHER EARTH? Are you kidding me? I’m all about the environment…but this is just ridiculous. I’m pretty sure the ex-NBC Nightly News Journalist is going senile. What is this world (excuse me for using your name in vain, Mother Earth) coming to when an imaginary being is even considered for “person of the year” from an influential magazine? Maybe I’m overreacting, but it’s pretty humorous to me.

You can read about it all at http://www.time.com/time/magazine/article/0,9171,1689222,00.html

My vote for Time’s person of the year? It’s a tie between Santa Claus and the Tooth Fairy. Both have been very influential in shaping who I am.
